Properties:
Piperazine has been known for many years as an effective drug in the treatment of gout and urinary tract lithiasis. It increases the solubility of urates in urine. Toxicity is low. Colchicine provides rapid pain relief in acute attacks of gout. The drug is specific for this condition and can thus be used as a diagnostic tool in gout and gouty arthritis. Colchicine has anti-inflammatory properties. Although it is very effective in the treatment of acute gouty arthritis, it is not effective in other types of pain. It is not an analgesic and does not affect uric acid clearance. Instead, colchicine binds to the microtubule proteins of neutrophils. This binding, in turn, inhibits the migration of neutrophils to the site of inflammation, thereby interfering with the inflammatory response to urate crystal deposition.
Kellin has an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles. Atropine sulfate is also added to relieve spasm of the urinary tract.
