Description

Trade name:

Magnesium Plus

Compound:

Each tablet contains:

Magnesium oxide 400 mg.

Magnesium gluconate 100 mg.

Properties:

Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation. It is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions involving energy metabolism proteins and nucleic acid products. Oral preparations of magnesium salts are used as a supplement in patients with magnesium deficiency due to restricted diet, alcoholism, or magnesium depletion caused by magnesium-depleting drugs (e.g., diuretics), or due to severe burns and regular exercise, which increases magnesium loss in sweat. Magnesium oxide can also be used as an antacid or laxative. The mechanism of magnesium oxide’s antacid action involves a reaction with water. In the presence of water, magnesium oxide is converted to magnesium hydroxide, which rapidly reacts with gastric acid to form magnesium salt and chloride, thereby increasing the gastric pH.

Indications:

Adjuvant therapy during diuretic therapy and in severe burns. Treatment of hypomagnesemia. For muscle cramps due to magnesium depletion. As a laxative for constipation or as a bowel preparation before surgery or radiological, proctoscopy and sigmoidoscopy procedures. For the treatment of dyspepsia and heartburn.

Method of administration and dosage:

For the treatment of hypomagnesemia, adjuvant therapy and symptoms caused by magnesium depletion, 1 to 2 tablets daily, tolerated without the development of diarrhea. For a laxative effect or bowel preparation for examinations: 1 tablet at bedtime with a full glass of water. For the treatment of dyspepsia: 1 to 2 tablets daily.

Contraindications:

Use with caution in patients with renal insufficiency. When used as laxatives, oral magnesium salts should be avoided in patients with gastric or intestinal obstruction. Use oral magnesium salts with caution in patients with dehydration. Repeated administration of oral magnesium salts may result in severe dehydration due to fluid loss through the gastrointestinal tract.

Precautions:

Take any other medications and magnesium oxide at least 2 hours apart. Do not take magnesium as an antacid for more than 2 weeks unless directed by your doctor. Do not take magnesium oxide as a laxative for more than 1 week unless directed by your doctor.

Side effects:

The most common reaction with oral magnesium salts is diarrhea.

Drug interactions: Concomitant use of cardiac glycosides with magnesium salts may inhibit absorption and possibly decrease plasma concentrations of cardiac glycosides. Diuretics may affect renal magnesium concentrations. Concomitant use of laxatives may result in magnesium toxicity, especially in patients with renal insufficiency. Administration of oral magnesium salts with oral tetracyclines or quinolone antibiotics may involve magnesium supplementation with other magnesium-containing antacids or form absorbable complexes, resulting in decreased absorption of tetracyclines and non-quinolones. Do not administer magnesium salts orally within 1 to 3 hours of taking an oral tetracycline or an oral fluoroquinolone. Magnesium-containing antacids and supplemental magnesium salts should not be used when receiving vitamin D analogs. Increases serum magnesium levels in patients with chronic renal failure.

Pregnancy and lactation: Do not use during pregnancy without consulting a doctor. Magnesium crosses the placenta and is excreted in breast milk.

Storage method:

Store at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees in a dry place, out of reach of children.
