Description
Trade name:
Maalox
Compound:
Each sachet contains:
Aluminum hydroxide 460 mg
Magnesium hydroxide 400 mg.
Auxiliary components:
sucrose solution, liquid sorbitol (non-crystallizing), xanthan gum, guar, natural lemon flavor, sodium chloride.
Properties:
An antacid drug, does not have a systemic effect. Its antacid capacity is 20 mEq H+ per 1 sachet (in vitro determination by the Rosset-Rice method). The drug neutralizes free hydrochloric acid without causing secondary hypersecretion of hydrochloric acid. Due to the increase in pH, when taking it, the peptic activity of gastric juice decreases. It also has an adsorbing and enveloping effect, due to which the impact of damaging factors on the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum is reduced.
Maalox can eliminate or relieve heartburn for several hours. Due to the balanced composition of its effect on gastrointestinal motility, Maalox usually does not cause constipation. Magnesium hydroxide and algedrate transmit X-rays.
Indications:
-heartburn;
– belching of sour contents.
Method of administration and dosage:
Children over 15 years old and adults:
The contents of 1-2 mini-packets are taken orally 1-1.5 hours after a meal or when heartburn occurs. If necessary, an additional dose of the drug can be taken 2 hours after the previous dose. The maximum daily dose is 6-12 mini-packets.
Contraindications:
-hypersensitivity to active substances and other components of the drug;
– severe renal failure;
-hypophosphatemia;
– sucrase/isomaltase deficiency, fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption (due to the presence of sorbitol and sucrose in the drug);
– children and adolescents up to 15 years of age.
Precautions:
Maalox should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. When prescribing Maalox to patients with mild to moderate renal impairment, plasma concentrations of aluminum and magnesium should be carefully monitored, and if they increase, the use of the drug should be discontinued immediately.
Algedrate with low phosphate content in food can lead to the development of phosphorus deficiency in the body. Therefore, when using it, especially long-term, it is necessary to ensure sufficient phosphate intake with food.
Side effects:
From the immune system: frequency unknown – hypersensitivity reactions such as itching, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylactic reactions.
From the gastrointestinal tract: uncommon – diarrhea, constipation.
Metabolism and nutrition disorders: frequency unknown – hypermagnesemia, hyperaluminemia, hypophosphatemia (with long-term treatment or taking high doses, or with taking standard doses with low phosphate content in food), which can lead to increased bone resorption, hypercalciuria, osteomalacia.
Storage method:
At a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees.
Package:
The cardboard box contains 20 sachets and paper instructions.
